I just got done watching the first season of Wilfred. You may not be familiar with the name, but as long as you haven’t had your head in a hole, you know the show. It’s the one where Elijah Wood talks to a guy in a dog suit. Only it isn't a guy in a dog suit; it’s an actual dog. Which means Elijah Wood's character is possibly a little crazy. For all we know he just might be crazy, but they haven't told us for sure yet.
Season 1 of Wilfredstarts off with Ryan Newman (Wood) completing the third draft of a suicide note. He wrote it on a computer, did a spelling and grammar check, then printed it off. From there he made a healthy smoothie with a killer ingredient. Xanax. However,he later found out that his sister, who “catches babies for a living” gave hima placebo. So now we follow Ryan while he thinks he is going to die in his sleep, but he can’t fall asleep because he is all jacked up on sugar pills.
Finally, morning arrives and his neighbor, Jenna Mueller, played by Fiona Gubelmann, comes by and asks Ryan to watch her dog, Wilfred, while she went out. Ryan has always had a thing for his Jenna so he kindly accepts. This is where the fun starts. As we mentioned before, Ryan sees Wilfred as a guy in a dog suit. They immediately become friends and have adventures together. The first starts out with Wilfred getting Ryan out of his uptight shell; they get high together and Wilfred continues to talk Ryan into pooping in his neighbors boot! The show continues down a similar path of Wilfred using Ryan to get what he wants and Ryan learning about himself from Wilfred. He becomes more confident, he no longer wants to kill himself and he eventually does whatever it takes to try to win over the love of his life.
While Wilfred isn’t great, it is entertaining. It’s one of those shows with a basic joke that runs throughout the show; and if you can’t tell I’m referring to the joke about aguy in a dog suit pretending to be a dog. The thing is I find it pretty hilarious. Wilfred has an amazing sense of smell. So amazing he can smell the shit in Ryan’s colon. He wants to play catch and gets upset when this kid doesthat thing where he pretends to throw the ball but doesn’t. He gets distracted by bubbles and one of those laser pointers a neighbor has. The list goes on of dog jokes and they remain funny to me. Also, Wilfred is played by the shows creator Jason Gann who actually plays this part really well. He can be suave, animalistic and just down right funny.
The show also has some dark humor lined throughout it and Wood does a great job of playing the whole thing strait. Season one left off with a cliff hanger and I’m looking forward to season two when it hits Netflix. Another thing that I like about Wilfred is it gave me a chance to get to know Elijah Wood which makes me even more excited for the remake of Maniac to come out. So if you’re on Netflix and want to watch something, try Wilfredout. Maybe take him to the park and play catch or something…
