Review: CARGOLS! (short film)

Cargols! is a short film from Spain that I was fortunate enough to see at the Phoenix FearCon V. Written and director by 26 year-old Geoffrey Cowper, Cargols! manages to jam all the fun and excitement of a big summer blockbuster into a 17 minute short film.

Scrawny lead kid you can relate to, girl of his dreams, girl of his dreams dating much bigger and better looking jerk, huge outdoor party in the park with a live band and plenty of drinking, and impending doom that could destroy the world. It’s all here in Cargols!

Joey is our lead here and we meet up with him and a couple of friends in the park, enjoying a concert having a good time. Joey sees Eva, the girl of his dreams who actually happens to be the first girlfriend he ever had. Joey decides to approach her and let her know he still loves her and that’s when her dumb boyfriend shows up.

To make matters worse, giant snails show up and crash the party. What’s poor Joey to do?

Wisely, Joey decides to take matters into his own hands. He’s going to get his girl back while saving the world from these stupid, big, slimy snails!

Cargols! is very reminiscent of sci-fi and alien invasion movies of the 50’s. It’s the perfect movie to show before a screening of something like The Blob. Simply put, it’s fun. For 17 straight minutes I was all smiles.

With Cargols! Cowper created a sci-fi romantic comedy with all the charm of Edgar Wright. I can’t recommend this enough.
