AEON: THE LAST VAMPYRE ON EARTH is one of those movies you see that has a really great concept but falls just a bit short on the execution side of things. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic world, the last human and the last vampire in the world meet each other inside a rundown warehouse. I love this setup. When I see this my hope is that this human and vampire will do battle with one another, trying to outwit and outsmart one another to see who comes out on top. Unfortunately that’s not quite what happens.
As the world on the outside begins to collapse, Catherine (April Basile) finds herself holed up inside a crumbling warehouse. As she wanders the warehouse she comes across some dead bodies and the remains of what appears to have once been some type of lab for experiments. Catherine doesn’t know what was being experimented on but she’s knows it’s no longer there and it was classified as “human predator.”
Catherine continues her journey throughout the warehouse until she comes across Aeon, the “experiment.” It’s clear from the moment that we see Aeon that he is not human. What he is we don’t know, but we do know that he doesn’t look to be in the best shape. As Catherine begins to approach Aeon she learns that he is the last vampire on Earth and he is near death as the result of starving from being imprisoned for years.
This setup I freaking love! We have what may be the last human on Earth what we know is the last vampire. They’re in this cool, abandon warehouse. The vampire is a pretty cool looking creature. He’s weak and spitting up blood, but he’s still a vampire. I don’t know what’s going to happen at this point, but I’m anticipating something pretty awesome to take place. Unfortunately, it never does.
What does happen is a history lesson on vampires and humans. Aeon goes into great detail explaining the history of man to Catherine. It’s all just very talky. Nothing really grabs you or pulls you in. It’s kind of like INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE but we never get the flashbacks to the stories that are being told.
I understand this is a low budget film, so having the ability to have those flashbacks probably wasn’t a realistic option. Outside of that the film doesn’t show any signs of being low budget really. It looks great and takes place in fantastic location. I really loved this dark, eerie setting. The makeup work on Aeon was very good. I liked his look and Falicki did a great job portraying him on screen.
At the end of the day AEON: THE LASY VAMPYRE ON EARTH simply lacks excitement. It’s a great idea with the perfect build up but that’s all it is. The groundwork and talent, however, is present and that does make me eager to check out some more work from Falicki.
