Title: BLOOD SOAKED
Year: 2014
Director: Peter Grendle
Writer: Peter Grendle
Starring: Heather Wilder, Rachel Corona, Laina Grendle, Lauren Myers

The Nazi zombie sub-genre seems to be booming these days. It has become a popular choice for various forms of media. One of the newer entries in the world of film is Peter Grendle's BLOOD SOAKED.

Two sisters watch their Nazi father die when they are just little girls. Now orphans left to fend for themselves, the sisters live in an underground military bunker in the New Mexico desert. The girls carry on experiments, which I assume their father begun, that involving raising the dead. Raising the dead of course means making zombies.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you but the sisters are making zombies to form a Nazi army, the Fourth Reich. They're plan is to take back the throne!

The girls get 'volunteers' for their army by picking up travelers along the highway. The most recent two participants are a pair of college kids heading back to campus after a night of partying. The sisters get a bit more than they bargain for as the college kids fight back.

BLOOD SOAKED is very much a low budget exploitation flick and because of this it does suffer from the same things most low budget films suffer from. The acting is mostly amateur, the dialogue isn't great and there are a few audio issues.

Fortunately Grendle does not allow his film to fall victim to these issues. He overcomes these flaws and still delivers on what is a pretty fun exploitation movie. The title is quite apt as the movie is indeed soaked with blood including a pretty gnarly decapitation scene.

The editing of BLOOD SOAKED is quite interesting. It's switches from black and white to color and back again. I assume this is to give the film that Grindhouse aesthetic. This works to varying degrees. This and the set design of the bunker really give the film and dirty, grimy look that works out great. It kind of makes you feel filthy and that's a good thing.

BLOOD SOAKED may not be perfect but it hits all the check marks required for a film of this nature. It's violent, it's bloody, it's uncalled for, there's Nazis, they're zombies and there's lesbians. All this more than makes up for the film's short comings, making BLOOD SOAKED an enjoyable entry to the indie horror world.

Rating: 3/5
