Review: 'I Heart Monster Movies'

Title: I HEART MONSTER MOVIES
Year: 2012
Director: Tyler Benjamin
Writer: Jennifer Loomis
Stars: Electra Avellan, Elise Avellan, Doug Bradley

When I popped in I HEART MONSTER MOVIES to give it a watch I knew it was a documentary. However, it was not the documentary I was planning to see. I was expecting a documentary about monster movies. I thought I was going to hear people talking about monster movies specifically. People involved in the movies, people that love the movies, etc. I thought maybe there’d be a history of monster movies. Something along those lines.

Instead I HEART MONSTER MOVIES is more about horror fans and the different conventions and events they go to. Various folks talk about how horror affects their life. We see a yearly event that takes place in Portland called the Zombie Prom. We hear from a car club for people that own a hearse.

We do also get some interviews with people from the world of horror movies. Doug Bradley and Tom Savini both share their thoughts on the genre and what the fans are like. They talk about their history with conventions. The most interesting story comes from Electra & Elise Avaellan who once had a fan give them a loaded gun and tell them to shoot someone at a convention. Luckily the Twins didn’t follow through with his request because little did they know at the time, the gun was real.

This is all fairly interesting but it was at all what I was expecting or wanting. I wanted to hear about horror movies, specifically monster movies, more than what inspires horror fans. While the conventions and the different zombie themed events are a lot of fun and cool, that personally doesn’t interest me too much.

I’m all about the movies and not the lifestyle. I wanted to hear more from Savini and Bradley. I want to know more about their various experiences on different horror movies. I want to know about their favorite horror movies. I want to know how they got into horror movies. I just want it to be horror movie centric.

At the end of the day I HEART MONSTER MOVIES is still ok. It does have interesting moments and interesting characters. It’s just not what I wanted.

Rating: 2.5/5
