Review: House on Sorority Row

Director Mark Rosman's "The House on Sorority Row" is a stylishly-filmed, slightly above-average slasher film from the glorious heyday of the genre. In standard form the film follows suit by mainly featuring characters mindlessly going off alone in the dark for the simple reason of being slaughtered. What's wrong with that though. The film features a few generally creepy scenes and one great reveal in a toilet.

The story focuses on a group of sorority sisters who have just graduated from college, but before they go are planning to throw a party. To get back at their sorority headmaster (Lois Kelso Hunt) they plan to play a little prank on her, only to see it backfire when they accidentally shoot her for real. After disposing of the body in the school's decrepit swimming pool, the party begins and so does the death count. The body soon disappears from the pool and the whodunit element of the story begins.

The film is familiar territory for anyone a fan of the 80's horror films in similar vain. The girls are completely disposable except for the clear as day final girl. All of that doesn't really matter though. "The House of Sorority Row" is for fans of these types of films and for fans I think there is a lot to like here. The atmosphere is really effective in a couple of scenes. The ending is particular creepy involving a full size doll suit. The kills are bloody and fun as well.

Overall this is a film you will know if you want to see it by now. I thoroughly enjoyed the film even if it is familiar. The Blu-ray release by Scorpion Entertainment is top notch. The film looks great with a clean print, saturated colors, deep blacks and a clean soundtrack.
