Review: The Perfect House

The Perfect House is a new anthology horror film. Three tales of torture and mayhem are loosely connected by a framing story about a couple touring a house for sale. We get to see three previous owners and learn that the house has quite the horrific past. The Perfect House is not perfect but it does feature some great gory moments and a few well pulled off sequences.

Of the three stories, the first is the strongest. It follows a brother and sister who murder their parents. The acting by the two young stars is convincing here. However the real star is the mood and overall gorgeous look that this segment has. Color corrected in black and white, this first segment feels atmospheric and moody. There is a general sense of the unknown here and the segment is full of tension.

The second story would be best described as a dark comedy. It follows a guy who kidnaps, tortures, rapes and kills people in the cellar of the house. The acting here is hit and miss but the interplay between the killer and a victim who has seen others come and go has its moments of wit and verve. The CGI effects here don't add much and the segment feels a bit disjointed at times.

The last segments follows a dinner guest who ends up killing everyone. While the story here is pretty weak, the gore is strong and full of surprises. At this point in the film, some idea as to why the house causes such mayhem would be helpful. Instead that is largely left unexplained. However this matters little if gore is what you are after. This final segment features so many gross moments. I particularly think the weed whacker kill is clever if not far-fetched.

Overall The Perfect House is uneven but full of enough moments that it flies by. The first segment is the shinning star of the film. In fact, I would love to see directors Kris Hulbert and Randy Kent explore or expand upon the story here. Check out Wild Eye Releasing to pick up The Perfect House today.
