Review: 'Uninvited'

Title: UNINVITED
Year: 1988
Director: Greydon Clark
Writer: Greydon Clark
Starring: Toni Hudson, Eric Larson, Alex Cord, George Kennedy, Rob Estes

Greydon Clark’s UNINVITED is one of the strangest, oddest movies I have ever seen. The plot is one that I’m not sure how to describe because it doesn’t make sense. Not one bit. In fact I have no idea how anyone came up with this.

The film opens up in a lab with some white coats trying to give a cat a shot. The cat breaks loose and everyone is on a high alert as they try and re-capture this cat. We quickly learn this isn’t a regular cat. Once they finally corner the cat, the cat simply opens his mouth and crazy creature pops out and kills everyone.

The cat gets out of the lab and into the real world. Eventually it makes its way onto a yacht. I don’t quite know how, but it happens. The yacht has an interesting mix of characters. There are some criminals, Walter (Alex Cord) and Mike (George Kennedy), a captain (Toni Hudson) to steer the ship and 4-5 college kids looking to have some fun on spring break. The important thing here though is the cat.

The bad guys are taking the yacht out to the Cayman Islands to participate in some illegal activities and they bring the kids along to serve as their crew. The criminals get free help and the spring breakers get a free trip on a luxury cruise ship. Everybody wins, right? Not so fast!

Before the ship takes off one of the criminals tries to kick the cat off. He doesn’t like cats and doesn’t want one on his boat. He changes his tune quite easily though when one of the kids says that he heard a cat on a ship is good luck. Well then that changes everything!

In between filler scenes of everyone partying and poor attempts to explain the plot, this crazy cat goes on a murderous rampage. One minute we have a normal cat, but as soon as you get too close the cat’s mouth opens and out comes this creature that attacks you. This cat scratches the face, goes for the throat, and bites off limbs. The cat doesn’t always kill you right away, but once it bites you you’re done because it infects you. And once you’re infected your skin begins to boil and bubble and blood bursts out! Then you die.

This is basically the entire movie until everyone ends up dead.

This is a bad movie for sure but I actually found it to be quite enjoyable. If you love B-movies and cats like I do, then you’ll probably enjoy this movie. This is everything you want out of a B-movie. It’s a plot that doesn’t make much sense, bad dialogue and lots of cheesy special effects. UNINVITED uses a lot of puppets and miniatures. These all look bad and cheap, but that’s part of the fun.

UNINIVTED is a movie about a mutant cat killing people on a cruise ship. You know whether or not this movie is for you.

Rating: 3/5
