Overlooked Horror Films - Day 28 - From Beyond (1986)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

From Beyond (1986)

What’s it about: Based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name this is Stuart Gordon's follow up to Re-Animator (1985). Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton return under Gordon's direction as couple of scientists who build a machine to stimulate the pineal gland in humans in order to interact with and see creatures from another dimension. What could possibly go wrong?
Why is it overlooked: Re-Animator gets all the attention so this film is often forgotten about. While the direction is tighter here, the film lacks the dark humor that Re-Animator has to help cover up some of the clunky dialogue.
Why is it worth a look: The film is a wonderful showcase for both Combs and Gordon's love a gross-out effects. From Beyond is closer to its beloved source material and I personally think its the best Lovecraft adaptation so far. While less gonzo than Re-Animator, the film has a stronger overall scare factor and a several humorous moments..
