The Holy Terror is apparently the second chapter of The Bible Belt Slasher but don't let that steer you away from the film. I don't think you have to have seen the first film to find things to enjoy in Bradley Creanzo's sequel. Jason Fry return to wreak more havoc on the families he tortured in the first film. The kill scenes are loosely strung together by a chase setup. Fry escapes from a mental institute only to return to town to kill again.
Sound familiar? The nods to Halloween are apparent only this time Christmas is the central holiday. The film gleefully references other horror films sometime lifting entire sequences or plots from other films. However, the best parts of The Bible Belt Slasher: The Holy Terror lie in its attempts to recreate the 80's. Creanzo loves the films of this era and it shows in every scene. The set design, hair and costumes all make direct and fun reference to a bygone era.
In fact, the scenes I enjoyed the most of the film have very little to do with the killer. The in-between scenes of character riffing about 80's things, channel surfing to find porn or a music video recreation all stand out as the film's most enjoyable moments. As does the performance by Bradley Creanzo as Dr. Landers, an obvious but over-the-top love-show for Dr. Loomis.
The main issues of the film come with the performance by Larry Baumer as the slasher. He simply goes way to overboard in his performance to ever be believable or scary. He seems to be going to a late era Freddy Kruger type character that mixes humor in with every kill. Unfortunately the charisma is not there. Despite some decent gore scenes, the horror elements largely fall flat here. See the film for the 80's love on screen and not the horror.
