Review: Dracula Untold (Blu Ray)

The film:    2/5
Dracula Untold is an unfortunate affair. The idea sounds cool enough on paper. Take the story of Dracula and expand on the how and why he turned into a vampire in the first place. However, director Gary Shore never indulges in the gothic tone nor the campiness of the story. Thus the film is overly serious and kind of a slog to sit through. While Luke Evans is well cast as Vlad in the film, the rest of the cast is another story. Sarah Gordon is particularly flat and awful as his wife who does nothing but worry and get herself almost killed.

The features: 4/5
The blu-ray is loaded with some worthwhile features. The alternate opening with director commentary is like a little mini film class. There are two featurettes that serve only to stroke Luke Evan's ego but there are still fun enough. The real standout is Dracula Retold that offers insight into the process of reimagining a famous story such as this.

The quality: 4/5
Dracula Untold is actually a pretty cool looking film with several clever effects sequences in it. All are presented wonderfully here on Blu-ray. The film's dark, bluish tone comes through clear and no bleeding of colors was noticed. All and all this is a solid transfer and the soundtrack is well done.
