Review: A LEGO Brickumentary

The Lego Movie was a feat that few could have pulled off. A genuine, heartfelt and extremely funny film emerged from what easily could have been a glorified toy commercial. A LEGO Brickumentary is an easy going doc that comes closer to the toy commercial than an inspired piece of entertainment. Still the film is very fun and a cool family oriented film that explains why LEGO is such a huge brand.

The film runs a gamut of various LEGO fans and creators. We get to see behind the scenes as master designers and master builders invent new way the LEGO brick can be used to create worlds. We see celebrities such as Trey Parker of South Park and NBA star Dwight Howard who are major fans of the toy. This all creates a giant picture of how awesome LEGO is and that is why the film feels somewhat like a giant commercial.

The film is narrated by an animated mini-figure voiced by Jason Bateman. This clearly is added for kid appeal but it keeps things light and occasionally funny. The film's best moment comes from a theorist who is using LEGO to teach the ideas of possibilities. How many shapes can be created from six LEGO bricks, the original package. This really shows the power behind the toy, its ability to allow for nearly infinite creations.

Overall, the film inspires more than it sells and that is an important distinction. Sure I walked out of the movie wanting to go buy a ton of LEGO kits and get to building but I didn't resent that desire. This is a fun film that the whole family is going to enjoy.

3.5/5
