Review: LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA

For what it is worth the Lake Placid sequels largely outshine the Anaconda sequels so it is a blessing that Lake Placid vs Anaconda leans towards the formula of the former rather than the latter. This SyFy creature feature lives up to the SyFy name filling the frames with poor CGI effects, stilted acting, unintentional laughs, and plenty of topless teenagers.

Yancy Butler is Reba, a returning badass sheriff alongside former Parker Can't Lose star Corin Nemec. The film's plot kicks off with scientists genetically altering these giant creatures. The cross-species plot makes one wonder why the writers weren't more clever with the name, Aliconda anyone? As you might guess, soon mutated creatures are running a muck on a small town. Thrown in a few sorority sisters on a pledge vacation and the local authorities and you've got yourself a movie.

Look, I like campy B-movies and SyFy has made a few worth checking out. The first Sharknado for instance had the right mixture of camp and mayhem. Lake Placid vs. Anaconda never pushes itself to such heights. It ends up feeling routine and dull aside from a few fun kill moments. The sad news is Robert Englund here who phones it in. Nemic and Butler do a fine job but the film's cheap CGI effects don't sell any of the fun.

2/5
