To Stream or Not To Stream: Love Sick Love

Love Sick Love earned my attention from its premise, man meets woman, woman turns out to be crazy. I like films in the vain of Fatal Attraction because they are often full of surprises. Love Sick Love is no exception and packs a few shocking surprises I did not see coming. Unfortunately the film struggles to find a sure foot and a strong voice. It's tone shifts from dark, almost silly comedy to thriller and back again. This happens in the same scene a few times in the climax, rendering the film confusing when it should be terrifying and lame when it should be darkly funny.

Love Sick Love follows Dolly, played with conviction by Lindsay Rose Binder, as she meets Norman, the uneven Matthew Settle. Things move quickly, more quickly than Norman wants. For whatever trepidations Norman has about Dolly, and there are some pretty clear signs, he decides to go away with her for a long weekend. This is when the trouble starts. I won't give away some of the surprises but I imagine only a few people will gel with this film's uneven tone.

Love Sick Love is shot well and has a few good performances. Jim Gaffigan turns in a funny performance even if he is underused. The thing that hold the film back is it can't fully decide when it wants to be a horror film and when it wants to be a dark comedy. When it commits to one or the other, the film works. However it shifts too often and the film never finds its rhythm.
