Review: Goth Kill

What happens when an immortal leader of a Satanic Cult crashes a Goth party full of fake vampires? Well in Goth Kill we get a fun but uneven mix of some mild theology, a few solid gore moments and an over-the-top fun lead performance by Flambeaux!.

Goth Kill's plot is partly where the unevenness lies. Frankly the film is hard to follow as it jumps back and forth to flashbacks telling the back story of  Nicholas Dread (Flambeaux!). Dread goes from friar to Satanic murder after renouncing God whilst being burned at the stake for unveiling a corrupt plot by the very church he served. The film also follows eighteen-year-old Annie Caldwell (Erica Giovinazzo) as she moves to New York to live with her slightly older and considerably worldlier friend, Kate (Eve Blackwater). Kate is a follower of the Goth scene, and she is eager to introduce Annie to it. These two stories clash in a blood bath at a Goth bar when some vampire role players accidentally conjure Dread.

Goth Kill has an interesting premise but its buried under an odd structure. Had the film been more clear and easy to follow, I would recommend it more. However the film is shot well and features some good music. It's micro budget doesn't hinder the filmmakers from using some clever techniques, particularly for a car accident. The acting is all over the map but the lead performances all do well.

Goth Kill may not be for everyone but I think it offers an interesting window into a group of people deep in Goth culture. The film seems to feature many names from that scene and that helps give the film an extra layer of interest. I only wish the plot had been less muddled. In the end, I am not sure what Goth Kill is saying but I enjoyed enough parts of it to say check it out.
