LOW is the story of Alice (Amy Comper), a city girl who runs into Edward (David Keyes) one day while wandering through the countryside. Right off the bat it’s easy to tell that Edward is a troubled man, but Alice tries to pay him no attention and be on her way. Unfortunately Edward does not allow that and takes Alice hostage. The two then begin a journey across the countryside with Alice constantly trying to escape and deep, dark secrets being revealed about both parties.
In a nutshell LOW is a movie that says, “hey, we’ve all got our secrets no matter how we may appear on the surface.” The secrets of Alice and Edward I can’t reveal without spoiling the movie, but I will tell you that they’re pretty effed up. Both these individuals have some demons that they must do battle with sometime in the near future or there’s going to be some not-so-pretty results.
LOW is a pretty slow film that kind of drags. The run time is a mere 70 minutes but it feels like it takes forever. The movie should be lean and quick with high tension, but it never really amounts to that. Yeah, secrets are hinted at and talked about eventually coming out in a reveal, but nothing really builds up. Stuff just sort of happens.
The film’s biggest issue is that you never really care about the characters. At least I didn’t. This probably explains why at the end of the day, their issues never really built up to anything for me. I just didn’t care. When it all came to a conclusion everyone was kind of awful. Where’s the fun in that? Give me at least one person with a likable personality.
The film is backed by a score that is uninspiring. I like a good thriller to have a nice, solid score that adds to the excitement. LOW does not have this. It almost feels like a temp track. I rarely comment on the music of a film unless it’s really good, but with LOW I just found it to be distracting.
The movie does have a little bit of gore that caught me off guard at the end. Really came out of nowhere. It won’t have that same impact on you because I just spoiled it, but it was my favorite part of the movie so I had to mention it. Other than that LOW didn’t really offer up much for me to enjoy.
Rating: 1/5
