Review: Veronica Mars

First off, let's make a few things clear. Veronica Mars is strictly for the fans and I have never seen an episode of the show. It's important to let you know that since there are things I had problems understanding that die-hard fans will not.

And why shouldn't this serve the fans, it was funded by them. Creator Rob Thomas, who pokes fun at his namesake sharing with the lead singer of Matchbox 20, set up a Kickstarter campaign and raised 5.7 million to make this film. The fans I was with loved the film and thought it served as a wonderful closing episode to a great series.Therein lies one the issues for non-fans. Veronica Mars looks like a television show. There is very little that is cinematic. However the film does feature some brief but nicely executed action scenes.

The story is smartly written as a addict backsliding into her old habits, just as many fans couldn't let go of the show. Veronica gets a call from her old fling Logan and is back to Neptune to solve the case. The plot feels a bit familiar when all is revealed but the script is full of quick wit and the pacing is spot on. Kristen Bell and company are fantastic. For Bell, this is the best role to date. She sells the acid-tongued Veronica as more than just a Buffy for sleuths.

Veronica Mars is truly a product of fandom and succeeds is paying its dues to those that paid for the film's production. If you get dragged by a marshmallow to go see it, don't fret. Veronica Mars is witty and fun even when things don't make sense within the context of just the film. For fans of the show, its a must see.
