#22 - CABIN FEVER - Horror Countdown to Halloween

This October we here at Dark of the Matinee are counting down our 31 favorite horror films. Join us daily as we countdown from #31 starting on October 1, 2012 leading up to #1 on Halloween!

#22 – CABIN FEVER (2002)
Dir. Eli Roth

#22 on our countdown is Eli Roth's debut film, Cabin Fever. Cabin Fever stars Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, James DeBello, Cerina Vincent, and Joey Kern as five college graduates that rent a cabin in the woods for the weekend. Once there they catch a flesh eating virus that rips their skin apart and forces the group to turn on one another.

The gore in this film is nice and the thought of a flesh eating virus is something that creeps me out quite a bit, but the scariest part of Cabin Fever has to be the way the friends all change and begin to act towards one another. Once the film opens up we see the group is clearly a tight knit group of friends. They get along well and the start of the movie plays almost like a college comedy.

The virus changes everything.

Once someone gets the virus most of the others want nothing to do with them. It quickly triggers something to make everyone fend for themselves. Best friends pull guns on one another. The scares pick up. And so does the gore.

Rider Strong, who most of us will remember as Shawn on Boy Meets World, does a really solid job in this film. He plays our lead Paul and he's the good guy of this all. He keeps his head when others lose theirs. I really wish we'd see him in more things.

I love this film. It may not be the most original plot, but its quick, fun and well done. Plus, it gave the world Eli Roth and for that alone this movie is worth it's ranking. Not everyone feels that way though.

I remember how I got and eventually saw Cabin Fever. A friend of mine bought it right when it came out. Special edition DVD for about $25. They hated it so much that they immediately drove to my house and gave it to me. Score.

My friend may not have been able to appreciate this, but I certainly do. Cabin Fever is a great little horror flick and easily something to consider watching every Halloween season.
