Overlooked Horror Films - Day 12 - Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat(1989)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989)

What’s it about: A group of vampires are now leaving in a small desert town. They were a special cream that protects them from the sun. They're trying to change their image and live alongside humans. A descendant of Van Helsing shows up and hilarity ensues.

Why is it overlooked: Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat was the last film from Vestron Pictures. Unfortunately Vestron Pictures went out of business before the film could ever receive a theatrical release. The only public screenings were at film festivals in Seattle, Palm Springs and Cannes. Eventually the film was released on VHS in the early 90's. In 2008 it made it's way to DVD and has begin to develop a bit of a cult following.

Why is it worth a look: Sundown is a brilliant blend of horror & comedy and vampires & westerns. Bruce Campbell is at his slapstick best as the descendant of Van Helsing determined to hunt down Dracula. The rest of the wonderful cast is filled out with the likes of David Carradine, Deborah Foreman and Maxwell Caulfield. I highly recommend checking this one out.
