Overlooked Horror Films - Day 13 - American Mary (2012)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

American Mary (2012)

What’s it about: Katharine Isabelle gives a memorable performance as Mary, med student who is broke and desperate. She sees a way to make "easy money" and takes it by performing unorthodox surgeries.
Why is it overlooked: Directors Jen and Sylvia Soska, aka "Twisted Twins", split audiences with their first film Dead Hooker in a Trunk so I think there was less buzz about this film than it should have received. Katharine Isabelle is not a star but this film could have made her one.

Why is it worth a look: American Mary combines dark humor, gore, feminism, and a visual sophistication into an unforgettable experience. This film really cements the Soskas as fantastic horror film directors. This is a sexy, quietly creepy film that has a great central performance.
