Overlooked Horror Films - Day 14 - Spider Baby or, The Maddest Story Ever Told (1967)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

Spider Baby, or The Madest Story Ever Told (1967)

What’s it about: A caretaker, played by the legendary Lon Chaney Jr, devotes himself to a demented family after their father passes away.

Why is it overlooked: I really don't know. Spider Baby isn't completely overlooked but it doesn't get the just praise it deserves. People talk about it sure, but it never gets placed on any top horror list and that's a shame. Something like Texas Chain Saw Massacre likely doesn't exist without Spider Baby coming first.

Why is it worth a look: Anytime Jack Hill is behind the camera is usually reason enough to watch something. Spider Baby is super dark and incredibly creepy, sort of leaves you feeling uneasy. It's perfect viewing for October. The performances are great with Hill regular Sid Haig leading the way.
