Overlooked Horror Films - Day 15 - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

What’s it about: This horror musical places the Phantom, Winslow Leach, in a rock n roll club where he is working on his Faust rock opera. Club owner Swan, a great Paul Williams, wants to steal the opera so he imprisons Winslow. One night Winslow breaks out to destroy his record factory but ends up getting disfigured. He then plots his revenge on Swan.
Why is it overlooked: Damn if I know. This opened on Halloween to empty seats. Brian De Palma would strike big in two years with Carrie but all his great film techniques are here. The musical side probably deterred some horror fans but don't let it stop you.
Why is it worth a look: The music and acting are amazing. The sets are crazy and stylish. The whole film feels like Hitchcock meets David Bowie. De Palma uses so many wonderful film techniques here. One split screen sequence is masterful. This is a fun retelling of the Phantom of the Opera and a great change up for a Halloween party.
