Overlooked Horror Films - Day 16 - Curtains (1983)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

Curtains (1983)

What’s it about: Six actresses all trying for the same part venture to a secluded snowy cabin with the director as he searches for his new star. The only problem, other than all the snow, is that one of these actresses is willing to kill for the part. Potential stars fall to their deaths at the hand of a creepy masked killer.
Why is it overlooked: Same reason Slumber Party Massacre is overlooked, there was just a glut of slasher films at this time. This film is also a Canadian production and perhaps didn't get enough publicity here in the States.
Why is it worth a look: The film is full of great performances and creepy kill scenes. The mask is of an old wrinkled woman and its very eerie to look at. In a brilliant scene, a woman is hunted down by the masked killer while ice skating. The image of a wrinkled old woman ice skated holding a sickle and intent on murder is one that will haunt me for a while. What makes Curtains really stand out is how engaging the whodunit aspect of the film is. The end is a genuine surprise twist.
