Overlooked Horror Films - Day 22 - Lifeforce (1985)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

What’s it about: She's Space Girl (Mathilda May), a monster from outer space who aims to harvest humankind's souls in order to feed her interstellar vampire brethren. He's Colonel Tom Carlsen (Steve Railsback), an American astronaut racing to prevent his planet from succumbing to the plague wrought by Space Girl's scheme. Will they or won't they? Okay this is the plot but really this film is best known as The Space Vampires.

Why is it overlooked: Director Tobe Hooper is a horror icon and understandably Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist get more attention. Even Funhouse gets more love than this and I don't know why.

Why is it worth a look: Hooper is on top form here even if the ending is lacking. The film features several amazing effects sequences, a great visual style and a dark sense of humor. The film is layered and fascinating. Like Alien or Event Horizon, horror and sci-fi blend perfectly to create a totally unique film that recently received an amazing Blu-ray release. This film is a bizarre but beloved film that more people need to explore.
