Overlooked Horror Films - Day 23 - Parents (1989)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

Parents (1989)

What’s it about: Michael, a young boy growing up in 1950's suburbia, leads a very typical life, well if you don't count the strange and horrible nightmares or the unease he has around his parents. Michael begins to suspect his parents are cooking something other than hamburgers.

Why is it overlooked: Becuase Randy Quaid is a crazy person? This movie should have a cult following yet every time I bring it up to someone they haven't the slightest clue as to what I'm talking about. From what I understand it didn't do great at the box office and critics weren't too fond of the film's tone.

Why is it worth a look: Parents is a terrific dark comedy. In my opinion it's far and away Bob Balaban's best effort as a director and Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt are perfect as the creepy 50's parents. There's some really fantastic moments and shots including a refrigerator that begins to bleed.
