Overlooked Horror Films - Day 8 - The Woman (2011)

Every day in October we will be highlighting one of our favorite overlooked horror films as a way to countdown to glorious Halloween. We are hoping to bring some attention to films that rarely get on horror lists during this time of year. We hope you enjoy!

The Woman (2011)

What’s it about: While out hunting a successful country lawyer comes across a woman in the wild. He captures the feral woman and takes her home and decides to "civilize" her, putting his family at risk.

Why is it overlooked: When the film debuted at Sundance a lunatic in the audience disrupted the Q&A session after the film claiming it was offensive to women. This may be partly why the film as flown much further under the radar than it should have.

Why is it worth a look: The Woman is a film that contains such an interesting balance. It's absolutely brutal, at times maybe even a bit hard to watch. At other times it manages to be darkly funny. This is an impressive balancing act pulled off by director Lucky McKee. Despite what the crazy person from Sundance thought, this film actually offers up a very powerful female performance. In fact I'd argue that McKee in general writes some of the best female roles in modern horror and The Woman is a great example of this.
