Director L. Gustavo Cooper's debut feature film THE DEVIL INCARNATE is now available on DVD and digital downloand courtesy of Image Entertainment. Cooper was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to talk about the film and other things horror related. Enjoy and then be sure to pick up THE DEVIL INCARNATE!
Chris Coffel: Where did the story for THE DEVIL INCARNATE come from? Was there anything specifically that sparked the idea and served as your main source of inspiration?
L. Gustavo Cooper: I have always been fascinated with folklore and literature. The basis of what we know about our fellow man were sculpted by folklore and we wanted to be apart of that. When I approached Coe Douglas he felt the same compassion I did for the idea. So we came together, did our research and created the story for the movie.
CC: When an audience sits down to watch THE DEVIL INCARNATE, what type of reaction are you hoping to get out of them?
LGC: For me I want them to see something they might not see anymore; a character driven thriller that you feel could happen to you. We didn’t want to go over the top and use this sort of blood and gore approach. It was meant to be a psychological story that the actors could embrace.
CC: You're still fairly new to the filmmaking game with THE DEVIL INCARNATE being your first feature and some shorts under your belt. To date, including what looks to be some upcoming work, everything you've done has been grounded in horror. Is horror your favorite genre and if so what do you think makes it stand out from other genres?
LGC: Horror is one of my favorite genres and so many great filmmakers are grounded in horror. When we look at what horror is, I find it to be very satisfying. This being the first one I’ve made, you learn that making a movie is a learning experience; it can be action packed, drama driven, it can be pop scares, or psychological. There are so many opportunities to flex your muscles and you have to start somewhere.
CC: Being that it's now October and this is the time of year horror movies really shine, do you have any mandatory movies that are required viewing for the Halloween season each year? Any Halloween traditions?
LGC: My birthday is October 25th so we usually do a sort of Halloween like thing for it. I love to watch Poltergeist. I usually watch that.
CC: What can fans of THE DEVIL INCARNATE expect to see from you next?
LGC: I think you will see something that is embracing my roots. I come from a very visual background, so my next film JUNE is going to really give somethe fans an idea of what I want to do and where I want to go! JUNE is going to be leaps and bounds from my first film.
