Review: 'Doctor Mordrid'

Title: DOCTOR MORDRID
Year: 1992
Director: Albert Band and Charles Band
Writer: Charles Band and C. Courtney Joyner
Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Brian Thompson, Yvette Nipar, Jay Acovone

The beauty of Charles Band and co moving the Full Moon catalogue to bluray is that not only do you get to enjoy some of your Full Moon favorites in a terrific new presentation but you can't to get caught up with some of the films that somehow slipped under your radar all these years.

One such movie that I somehow missed out on was DOCTOR MORDRID. Directed by Charles and Albert a and and starring the legendary Jeffrey Combs, I'm not sure how I was totally unaware of this film's existence. I'm very happy to say that I am now quite aware of this fantastic little movie.

Combs stars as the titular Mordrid, a wizard sent to Earth to stop the evil wizard Kabal, played by the wonderful Brian Thompson, from opening the gate to hell. Essentially we have wizard Combs doing battle with wizard Thompson. How can that be anything but awesome?

The film begins with Mordrid having already been on Earth for a 100 plus years. He was sent there by a being known as The Monitor to guard over the human race. Mordrid's wait finally comes to an end with he begins to notice a series of thefts that he believes to be related to Kabal.

Unfortunately just as Mordrid is gearing up to hunt down Kabal he is wrongfully arrested for murder. Samantha Hunt (Yvette Nipar), a research consultant to the police and someone who lives in the same building as Mordrid, helps set him free. Once free Mordrid reveals his true identity and purpose to Samantha and she helps him seek out Kabal.

DOCTOR MORDRID is very much a sci-fi/fantasy film from the late 80's/early 90's. The effects are a bit cheesy and dated by today's standards but none of this deters from the fun. The key here is fun. DOCTOR MORDRID is loads of it! The actors look like they're having a blast with Combs in particular looking to really be enjoying himself.

This is only the second Full Moon film I've seen on bluray. It doesn't quite look as nice and sharp as TRANCERS does on blu, but it's still very solid nonetheless. Whether you're a fan of Full Moon, Jeffrey Combs or just sci-fi & fantasy, DOCTOR MORDRID is sure to make for an excellent entry into your bluray collection.

Rating: 4/5
