Some of you may remember that last week my good friend and colleague Chris wrote about how we shouldn't get to upset about the news that Hitchcock's Rebecca was being remade. He pointed out some fantastic remakes including the Coen Brother's True Grit and John Carpenter's The Thing. Movies we both adore. With that in mind I offer the other side of the coin.
Case in point, one of Chris's favorites is getting remade. A new re-imagining of Valley Girl will be coming to theaters as soon as next year. The original film starred Nicolas Cage as a punk from Hollywood who falls for Valley Girl Deborah Foreman. The film has a great Cage performance that helped launch his career. Plus it had a fantastic soundtrack.
The new Valley Girl is going to be directed by Clay Weiner. His only credit is Fred: The Movie. Are you eating your words yet Chris? There will be some departures from the original. I quote from Deadline that broke the story, "this version of Valley Girl follow the original story of a punk guy with no money from the wrong side of the tracks who sets his sights on winning the affection of a Valley girl with a loutishly preppy boyfriend. In the musical, the actors will sing ’80s New Wave tunes from bands like The Go Go’s and The Cars."
So you see on one hand a remake may improve on the original or add some great new things. On the other you get a beloved cult film getting a musical treatment. The way things are going we can only hope for Halloween The Musical sometime soon, featuring the song "Boogeyman Blues."
