Review: In Fear
In Fear is lean and scary. Its a thriller that makes the most out of a common situation, getting lost. Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy(Alice Englert) are headed to a festival. They recently met each other. On the way, Tom mentions he got them a hotel instead of camping with friends. On the way to this hotel, they get lost...or do they.
For the first half of In Fear, the film is unpredictable and engaging. The developing relationship of Tom and Lucy keeps us interested until the scares begin. Once they start to get lost, the movie zeroes in on being a survival-style horror film. Scares come out of nowhere. The film is shot in pitch black of night and utilizes shadows very well.
Once Max (Allen Leech) enters the story, the film seems to lose something. Perhaps that his appearance makes us draw too many conclusions that end up being correct. The film is not able to get back its sense of surprise and shock after he arrives.
In Fear is a solid thriller. It moves quickly and packs in a few good scares. The film suffers from a final moment that doesn't make sense. We must know the motivations of the antagonist if the terror is supposed to mean something.
